2026 Abstract - COTTON SESSION - DISEASES AFFECTING COTTON SEEDLING STAND ESTABLISHMENT: Fungal pathogens and nematodes can reduce cotton seedling stand densities. Common fungi associated with seedling disease and seed decay include Rhizoctonia solani, Globisporangium ultimum (syn. Pythium ultimum), G. irregulare (syn. P. irregulare), Berkelomyces basicola (syn. Thelaviopsis basicola), and Fusarium solani. Soil conditions that delay seedling emergence, such as cool, wet soils, can promote seedling disease development. Furthermore, high populations of plant-parasitic nematodes can impact seedling stand densities. This presentation will discuss key pathogens and environmental factors contributing to poor stand establishment in cotton, and outline management strategies to mitigate their impact. 2026 Abstract - ROUNDTABLE - COTTON LEAF SPOT DISEASES: A CAUSE FOR CONCERN OR JUST COSMETIC?: The leaf spot complex, which includes Stemphylium leaf spot, Alternaria leaf spot, and Cercospora leaf spot, is often considered a minor issue in cotton. However, under certain environmental conditions, these diseases can become severe and raise concerns about potential yield losses. This presentation will explore a case study from Arkansas where leaf spot diseases were unusually severe, prompting questions about when such outbreaks warrant concern. Additional discussions will include other foliar diseases such as target spot and areolate mildew. Finally, the discussion will address environmental conditions, production practices, and agronomic practices that promote severe disease development, along with when and if management strategies are necessary to protect cotton yield potential.
